“Starting on day one, we will end inflation and make America affordable again, to bring down the prices of all goods.”
That’s what candidate Donald J. Trump said in August while stumping in Montana.
By now you know the Consumer Price Index increased 3% in January over a year ago and liberal news outlets gleefully are jumping down Trump’s throat.
But let’s be fair. He didn’t become President until Jan. 20. How can he reasonably be blamed for the January increase?
Reasonably, he can’t, but we are talking cheap political advantage, not reason.
He has no one to blame except himself, for his habit of promising things he could not deliver.
Such as ending the Russia-Ukraine war on “day one.”
Nice sentiment, but not within his ability. Conversely, he has delivered on other “day one” promises, through executive orders.
Here’s a list of 11 “day one” promises.
He’s been in office for less than a month and he’s being blamed for the price of eggs.
That’s unfair, but he never should have promised his election would result in instant lowering of inflation and groceries.
Campaign promises are notoriously difficult to keep. He delivered only a fraction of them during his first term, per a score card developed by PolitiFact.
During his first candidacy, journalist Selena Zito summed up Trump’s appeal — and rejection — by saying his fans take him seriously but not literally, while journalists take him literally, but not seriously.
That remains true.
I am not a fan of Trump’s, but I am a fan of fair play, which I accord to both sides.
I know MAGA people will be saying, “He is working on ending the war.”
Yes, he is. And I wish him well.
And it would have been so much better if he had said he would devote time and energy to ending the war, instead of saying he would get it done on “day one,” or even earlier. He said it. Don’t blame others for repeating it.
Take Marc Fogel.
Trump was applauded for gaining the release of the American hostage because he went about the quiet business of diplomacy and surprised us, rather than his usual blistering braggadocio in advance. See how that works?
I know he’s a fan of Teddy Roosevelt.
Trump might try to employ Teddy’s advice — speak softly and carry a big stick. That might please his friends, and confound his critics.

Since he was a young man Trump has always talked big and thought big. He’s been in the public eye for decades. And many people resent him for his cocky personality. That’s who he is. You should be used to it by now. If you voted for him you are very happy because he gets things done that are good for the country and the world. No one with common sense thought he would get certain things done on day one. But he is a lot closer to ending these wars . And we are a lot better off with Trump than we would have been with Harris and the democrats.
People who paid attention in high school know that inflation is caused by many factors: monetary policy, disruption in supply chains, tax increases, wage increases, increase in price of raw materials, energy prices. People whose sources of information do not include Fox propaganda and other MAGAt sources that tell them what to think, also know that inflation is a world wide phenomenon, that became especially acute after the world wide pandemic. Yet throughout the election cycle Trump and the Magadonians insisted that Biden was at fault for inflation.
Yes, there is a great deal of derision among people — and they are NOT all liberals — at the Dear Leader’s excuse for inflation going up. If it had gone down, I am certain that he would not have credited Biden for that. Trump’s blaming Biden for inflation under his own presidency is like a guy getting pulled over for speeding and telling the cop, 'Yeah, but the last guy who drove this car was going even faster!’
“People whose sources of information do not include Fox and other ‘MAGAt’ sources” are often not getting the entire story. I know this from talking to committed progressive friends who often have no idea that another side to a story even exists. They are surprised when I can actually back it up with facts and legitimate original sources. I don’t think it works quite the other way. May right leaning friends and I regularly pay attention to left-wing sources, from CNN and MSNBC to Mother Jones and other outlets. We are not afraid to hear the other side, because sometimes, gasp, the other side has good points. Too bad it doesn’t work the other way around.
I have screamed for YEARS that to be informed, you need more than one information source.
If we believe what politicians promise, we are a dumber nation than I imagined. Remember Bush's "Read my lips, no new taxes"? or anything Lyndon Johnson or Richard Nixon said? Or Bill Clinton's pious "I did not have sex with that woman"?
"Our lives, our liberty, and our property are never in greater danger than when Congress is in session." -- Mark Twain.
That man knew what he was talking about. i
Which brings to mind, Vince, that other old saying: "How can you tell when a politician is lying?" You already know the answer!
Amen, brother.
Trump is, and always has been, a LEGENDARY liar and braggart. If you study his life, you know that he was taught to NEVER admit to be being wrong, always heap praise upon yourself, and never show weakness. These traits were taught to him by Roy Cohn (his swine lawyer) and his father (the slumlord). These are NOT the traits of a leader. A leader takes full responsibility for EVERYTHING bad that happens under their purvey, and always gives praise to others who work for him/her when thing go well. Trump has never done any of those things, and he never will, because he is also a swine.
Wanda's points above are absolutely correct. Trump ran virtually his entire campaign by blaming Biden for inflation (and immigration, of course, a charge which had some merit). All the intelligent people (and yes, this leaves out a LOT of the voting public, including Vince and Daniel, above) know that the factors Wanda mentioned above are indeed the root causes of inflation, COVID being the main one. That's just common sense. Trump knew he wasn't going to fix shit because he simply does not have that ability. No president really does. And that's exactly how this is playing out. But of course, you geniuses bought into it just like you buy into everything he tells you (how's that healthcare plan coming?).
The difference between the Trump maroons and people like me and Wanda (and REAL Conservatives, too) is that we do not swear fealty to one man. We swear fealty to the Constitution of the United States, and we stand behind those who swore to uphold it and act upon those beliefs. Trump has spent his entire first three weeks in office breaking laws, destroying government agencies, appointing morons to lofty positions, and clearing the decks for himself and people like Musk (swine #3) to be able to break the laws unchecked. Congress has turned a blind eye to this behavior, which in itself threatens to make them irrelevant. This is dangerous, and counter to the way our government was set up to work by the founders.
I know Stu believes the checks and balances of Democracy will hold and prevent this cretin from destroying us all. And I certainly hope he is correct. However, he (and you all) should note that Adolph Hitler destroyed the German Constitution and the Weimer Republic in 53 days by using (you guessed it) the German Constitution.
History tell us one thing for certain: If it happened before, it can damned well happen again.
I agree with all except for the classic mistake of equating Germany, which was an untested democracy for TWELVE YEARS, versus our 224 years. I stand by my previous prediction that SCOTUS will stop him. Addition prediction — if his tariffs lead to higher prices and inflation, GOP will lose the House AND a small handful of elected Republicans will peel away from the gutless majority.
Perhaps Nazi Germany is not quite analogous. It is more likely that we're descending into something like modern Hungary: an illiberal democracy dominated by a structurally-unbeatable minority party that uses its disproportionate political strength to exert cultural control.
You are an optimist and I beg to disagree. I’m glad you think the SC will uphold the constitutional order. Moreover, it’s unclear whether Trump would obey SC rulings against him, either. On the campaign trail it was reported that Trump’s running mate JD Vance said, “When the courts stop you, stand before the country like Andrew Jackson did and say, ‘The chief justice has made his ruling, now let him enforce it.’” He also recently remarked that “Judges aren’t allowed to control the executive’s legitimate power,” hinting at strong opposition to rulings the administration disagrees with.
JD Vance is an anarchist. Trump doesn’t know what that word means and is not thoughtful enough to have thought things through, as anarchists do (although they get it wrong). But he is a sociopath. He wants what he wants when he wants it. If that means blowing up the republic, then that is what he will do and he will ignore the SC and anyone or thing that is in his way. Who will step in to stop him?
Hungary is certainly better than Nazi Germany, but I am not too familiar with Hungary, so I won’t comment further.
As for SC, time will tell if my optimism is correct, meaning they won’t give Trump his way, or deny him, on every case. I say they will not allow overreach.
As for Vance, he did well in law school, not civics. The PURPOSE of the judiciary is to restrain the other two branches.
Trump said he would appeal court decisions, but obey.
If refuses,THEN the libs will be happy for the Second Amendment. It will be civil war.
It’s only been 3 weeks and you are ready for a strait jacket. Calm down things are going to get a lot better. You never complained about Biden and the democrats when they were destroying the country. Sit back and watch Trump show you how it’s done. MAGA😂
I agree with the premise of your blog, but I was most startled to learn of Trump's liking Teddy Roosevelt? Doesn't he know that Teddy was also one of the greatest progressive politicians of his time? If you have a chance, catch the documentary on Amazon Prime on TR's life and career.
I thank Freeze for more expressing my thoughts so well that I need not comment. However, I did just watch JD Vagabon's comments to the Munich Security Conference, I will support his nomination for an Academy Award for portraying a delusional and dangerous politician. America take notice!
So, I'm watching BBC News. The story was about how the "US gov't was trying to rehire nuclear safety employees it had fired Thursday after concerns grew that their dismissal could jeopardize national security". Musk & his 'muskrats' strike again. Who let's loose a malignant narcissistic opportunist upon government; why another malignant narcissistic opportunist. Can't wait to see the upcoming NASA budget.
