Huge majority of Americans reject Trump disobeying courts

“Rule of law” will be an issue in 2026, and will hurt Republicans

Huge majority of Americans reject Trump disobeying courts

Not to pat myself on the back, but…

Just yesterday I published a column that focused mainly on President Donald J. Trump's running battle with the courts.

Mostly it concerned the government’s illegal and mistaken deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to his native San Salvador. Nothing is saying that Abrego Garcia is a good guy. The issue was solely that the government made a mistake, to which it admitted, yet refused to reverse it. The issue was the rule of law.

If you missed the column, you can read it here

It closes this way: “Most Americans are law-abiding, and will not tolerate a political party that is not.”

I wrote it Tuesday night, published it Wednesday morning. Wednesday afternoon I learned that the Reuters news service had done a poll, reporting that 82% of Americans believe the President should obey federal court rulings, even when he disagrees with them.

The issue is the rule of law and more than two-thirds of Republicans agree, along with 82% of independents.

Only 14% of all adults disagreed, creating an unbelievable gap between the pros and cons. A huge chasm rejecting Trump’s actions. Those attitudes will translate into votes.

I am not saying this will be the most important issue in the 2026 midterm elections, but it will be an issue, which will hurt the party. Republicans.

Reinforcing my prediction that, due to Trump’s overreaching on this and other issues (tariffs, cough, cough), the GOP will lose the house.
