The Democrats’ theme for Monday’s Night One was “For the People,” which is Kamala Harris’ tagline, reflecting how she introduced herself in court when she was a prosecutor.
I call it Losers Elders Night, with the two biggest names being losing Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and nudged-into-retirement President Joe Biden.
The Dems are flying high, with Kamala’s polling numbers higher than Biden’s in almost every category.
With that said, there was an overwhelming sigh of relief gratitude for Joe Biden.
It was kind of like when a rich, boring uncle comes to visit. You love having around, but can’t wait for him to leave.
But speaker after speaker sang his praises and accomplishments to the skies, paving the road for him to deliver his own eulogy. It could have been like a Stockholm Syndrome moment.
It wasn’t. For more than 45 minutes, looking fresh and alert, Biden uncorked a great speech, divided between a list of accomplishments, and attacks on the character and policies of Donald J. Trump.
But that was preceded by a full five minutes of cheers and chanting from the crowd in the Union Center. Even during his address, the crowd chanted “We love Joe,” and “Thank you, Joe.”
Toward the end, he touched on the forbidden fruit of the last month — why he stepped down.
“I love this job, but I love my country more,” adding it was “not true” that he was pushed out.
He took several opportunities to praise Kamala, whose selection he called the “best decision” he ever made.
He seemed sincere.
Along the way he scattered some Bidenisms, such as, abour his wife Jill: “I love her more than she loves me.”
I know what he meant, but it was a screwy construction.
Then, as always, “No, I’m serious. Think about it. Not a joke.”
And then, with hearts full of love, and eyes full of tears, grateful Democrats wished good riddance luck to their former chief.

One of the best lines came from Maryland congressman Jamie Raskin. He told Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance there was a sudden opening “Because they tried to kill your predecessor,” Mike Pence.
He was referring to those on Jan. 6 who were carrying a gallows and shouting, “Hang Mike Pence.”
Bittersweet moment. After a video tribute to him, Rev. Jesse Jackson was wheeled out in a wheelchair, able to feebly wave, but apparently too feeble to speak. He is among the last of the civil rights lions of the 1960s. The Philadelphia Daily News endorsed his candidacy for President in 1988, partly out of conviction, partly a stunt to draw attention to ourselves.
Best name-calling. New York Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called Trump a “two-bit union buster.”
Best self-discovery. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, noting Trump’s mocking of Kamala Harris’ laugh, said, “Sounds familiar.” She did not laugh out loud as she said it.
I love that Freudian slip in your second sentence: “Hillary Carter.” Now that really made my entire evening much more enjoyable! 😊
I must be really tired. I would normally catch something like that but I missed it. In fact after reading what you said I had to scroll back up to see it for myself. Oh well, back to bed for me.
Not sure it was Freudian, but it sure was a brain fart. i explained more to Paul D.
Thanks for your objective critique of day one. Can’t wait to see how you disparage the balance of Harris supporters.
Meanwhile, I missed the talk by Hillary Carter (“I call it Losers Elders Night, with the two biggest names being losing Presidential candidate Hillary Carter, and nudged-into-retirement President Joe Biden.”)
Was that before or after Hillary Clinton’s address?.
As a one-time journalist, you know the value of copy editors. Mine was asleep. So was my brain. It might have been different had the Dems not allowed the event to drag so badly. Most of the East Coast was asleep by the time Joe spoke.
I also silent on Joe’s “fine people on both sides” line. His version has been debunked many times. Along with his billionaires pay 8% tax. The brain fart error has been corrected.
As far as disparaging, I called it a great speech. I also delivered a few pokes, as I did with the Republicans. It’s part of what I do. As you well know.
I saw it as Angry Estrogen Night.
Yes, and women should be angry at the way they have had to struggle with the misogyny in the U.S. Men want to control their bodies; they get paid less for the same work (women make 84 cents for every dollar men do); they experience sexual harassment in the workplace, are victims of domestic violence, are more likely to live in poverty, and I could go on and on. Finally, for this country to not have had a female president as yet is a disgrace, when other countries have.
Sorry, inequality does not make the argument for a woman president, any more than for a Puerto Rican president. As the statistical majority, women should be able to elect anyone they want. Hillary won the popular vote by 3 million. It is HER fault she did not play the electoral college game correctly. PS: This man voted for her.
Stu, you are smart enough to know that is not the issue. Flowers said it was angry estrogen night. Women are angry for all the host of reasons I articulated, not just that they have not been president. The fact that Republican men are trying to control their bodies is a bigger factor than the president one in their anger.
Republicans don’t want to control women’s bodies. They want women to control their bodies. Irresponsible women get pregnant. The great majority of abortions are for convenience not for rape, incest or medical reasons. Responsible women don’t get pregnant. Teach women to be responsible.
The fact that women are angry, rightfully sometimes, does NOT make a woman “entitled” to the presidency.
And not all women are OK with abortion. Pew reports 33% of women OPPOSE abortion.
I’m not a fan of abortion. And I’m not a fan of the abuse of abortion. But as long as men are bigger and stronger than women, and as long as they can (and do) force pregnancies, abortion must remain legal. Women must have the right to terminate a forced pregnancy. To me, it’s just this simple.
We allow a lot of things in this country to be perfectly legal despite the fact that their abuse causes harm and even death, sometimes in large numbers. For example, guns, alcohol, and motor vehicles all provide some good, while their abuse and/or misuse can and does cause a lot of harm and (many) deaths.
And I’d rather be where someone who truly needs help can get it. Because there are still plenty of abortions for rich, connected Republicans in the states where it’s now illegal. That’s the reality.
There are literally thousands of churches who can get their flocks out there and “teach women to be responsible.” (Idiotic statement). Is every abortion for convenience another failure for the Christian Right? Hmmm…
Stu, where did Wanda say anything about a woman is entitled to be President? I just reread her posts here and I cannot find anything that even remotely says that.
Yes, Bogart. I’m waiting for an answer to that as well.
Wanda, it appears he isn’t going to respond.
Laughing my ass off at you two. What a comedy act.
Danny, KMA!
It’s actually hard for me to find the original, or SECOND comment she made. I stand by my interpretation of the first, I might be wrong about the second.
Why waste your time. The man is responsible for nothing but misery to the country and the world. Good riddance!
Yes, Daniel, never let the facts and numbers get in the way of your negative, inaccurate world-view. The U.S. economy post-COVID is stronger than any other in the world, and our handling of inflation, which has been a world-wide problem, has been stronger than that of any other country. But you keep buying into the negativity and bullshit the Republicans are selling. You keep ignoring the numbers and the evidence of your eyes. You have another four months to do so before a new Democratic president is elected and your orange god is kicked to the curb and hopefully jailed. Then you can bitch and moan for four years as she continues to lift up the middle class and build the economy from the middle out instead of from the top down. Enjoy your misery.
Biden did such a good job the democrats kicked his ass to the curb. Now they replaced him with Harris who they thought was bringing down the ticket a month ago. Only an idiot would think Biden was successful. Talk about drinking the kool aid. I only hope we still have more traditional right thinking Americans than assholes like you. I’m
Biden was removed because of his age, nothing more. Trump did such a bang up job, the American people kicked his ass to the curb 4 years ago.
And hopefully the people will see the great mistake they made and correct it. We would have been so much better off if Trump was re-elected. Are we really a socialist country.
In your opinion we would be better off , but his conduct after he lost the election should disqualify him from ever holding office again.
Who’s the republicans nominee?
Daniel, an orange-skinned POS is the Republican nominee.
Clearly Trump, so the party of family values and patriotism is only for when the Democrats deny they lost the election and try to stop the peaceful transfer of power.
Get over it
Lol..,that’s your comment to betraying the republic. You are a complete fraud.
Why aren’t you upset about all the damage Biden and the democrats caused.
Why aren’t you upset that Trump tried to usurp power in an election he lost? That’s the more important question….you would live in a dictatorship just because you liked what he said?
Because it’s not true. Prove it.
Lol…talk about delusional. You are in a cult.
👍
If he made you miserable Danny boy, more power to him. I hope Harris does the same.
He made everyone’s life miserable. You are just to stupid to notice
Somehow the nation has survived bad presidents (e.g., Fillmore, Nixon, Carter, etc.). We probably will survive a Harris or Trump presidency — so long at the House and Senate are there to rein in their more idiotic actions. Let Joe Biden go in peace. Making fun of him is making fun of ourselves as we put him into the presidency.
As I’ve said before, Trump doesn’t scare me. He’s narcissistic, meandering, and has no solid policies except those that will enrich himself and others like him. But he’s 78 and obese, a doubly dangerous combination with JD Vance waiting in the wings behind him. The fact that Vance ascribes to, in the shadows like most of his ilk on the dark web, doing away with democracy and replacing it with a monarchial system, now that is scary. Check Peter Thiel and Calvin Yarvin to see what he really believes. I have a friend that feels assured the military, if not Congress will stop him and continues to support Trump. But do we really want to get to that?
Do you have an announcement you want to make here, Vince?
I am replete with rue.
Stu, as much as I want to have some fun with Vince’s post I’m going to leave it alone.
Jesse Jackson is and remains a self enriching phony!
Maybe to some. But not to those in the hall. He is a hero to them.
Joe was rescued by the DNC. He would have lost the general election in November. Instead of Losers night it could be labeled older generation night. Hillary Clinton lost the Electoral College vote because she did not campaign in Michigan. His gratitude speech last night was a look back on his achievements. Father Time always wins. I believe some of the leadership in the DNC were thinking, don’t let the door hit you in your ass on the way out. Image is important in our nation. President Biden’s image opened the door to his exit more than his stumbling debate. Trump who is so vain about the image and perception of Democrats, should consider looking in the mirror before criticizing Kamala’s image. The show will go on for another four days. Looking forward to being entertained while commercials are on for the Phillies game.
I DID call it Elders Night, following my joke about losers. Small point — Hillary lost by not campaigning in Wisconsin, not Michigan.
Bill Clinton tonight will cap the Elders’ respect. Regardless of how Kamala does, the party is passing from the Clintons and Obamas and Bidens to — who? Phil Murphy? Gavin Newsom? Josh Shapiro? AOC?
Btw, John Kerry has been shoved down the memory hole. Lots of love from Carter, not a mention of Kerry did I hear.
Hopefully the torch is passed down to a centrist, common sense, financially astute, empathetic leader who is younger and has a positive attitude on our future. My hope is that both parties can deliver this type of leader for our country. For the Democratic Party, I see Josh Shapiro filling that role.
🎯
Good grief Danny Boy. You are a prime example of Dunning-Krueger. Republicans don’t want to control women’s bodies? They want women to control their bodies? So you are saying they want to control their choices and tell them what to do, eh? Great rejoinder there genius. Irresponsible women get pregnant? And pray tell, Einstein, who gets them pregnant. The great majority of abortions are for convenience? Wrong, they are for financial reasons for the most part. Woman already had kids and BC failed. Teach women to be responsible, and who would be doing the teaching? Repubs? Who would teach the men responsibility? I wasn’t born with enough middle fingers to let you know how I feel about you.
You certainly aren’t teaching them. You teach them to murder their babies. I was listening to a democratic politician the other day and he was saying what a gut wrenching decision it was for women. It’s only gut wrenching if you make the wrong decision. I can’t imagine the nightmares you have for a lifetime because you thought you were saving a few bucks.
And of course you are an expert on women’s feelings. Do you have any clue of how stupid you sound?
You have Daniel derangement syndrome
Please check my response to Bogart.
Daniel & his fellow misogynistic Republicans aren’t actually ‘Pro-Life’; they’re really ‘Pro-Birth’ where they want the mother to give birth, but not help pay the costs of raising it. Gov. DeSanctimonius just nixed a $250 mil federal grant to feed children during the summer, for ex. Republicans are against child’s health insurance programs, WIC, Pre-K ed, public schools in general, any form of government assistance, etc…
Stu, where do you see that I said that women are entitled to the presidency or that all women are for/against abortion? Methinks you are deliberately skewing my points.
In contemplating the possibility Vice President Harris could become our next President, my thoughts were drawn to other first women world leaders- Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher & Angela Merkel came to mind. Wow, what a powerful collection of historical figures.
Regardless of what you think about Secretary Clinton, she might have fit into this group. She just ran into two freaks of nature on her quest.
Does Vice President Harris belong in this esteemed company?
That is a fair question.
